Support the ADINA Act

Man dressed in business attire is in a pharmacy aisle and looking intently at a drug package label.

The ADINA Act is a bipartisan bill in Congress that would require drug labels to clearly disclose any ingredients derived from major food allergens or gluten-containing grains to protect people with allergies or gluten sensitivities.

The bill:

  • Requires drug labels for human use to clearly identify any ingredient that is, or is derived from, a major food allergen or a gluten-containing grain (such as wheat, barley, rye, or their hybrids).
  • If a drug label does not disclose the presence and identity of these ingredients, the drug will be considered misbranded under federal law.
  • The new labeling requirement will take effect either on a date set by the Secretary of Health and Human Services or two years after the Act is enacted, whichever comes first.
  • The goal is to improve transparency and safety for people with food allergies or gluten sensitivities by ensuring they have the information needed to avoid allergens in medications.

The ADINA Act provides a targeted, common-sense solution to ensure patients with certain allergies can confidently take medications they need to stay healthy. The bill does not mandate reformulation, removal of ingredients, or changes to manufacturing processes. Its purpose is transparency, enabling patients and providers to make informed treatment decisions using information that already exists.
